In my past four years at Pratt, I learned the most from watching my friends create. This book accumulates and shares part of this knowledge, for anyone interested in making.

Taking advantage of being surrounded by so much scrap material, I prompt my friends to use the natural materials they can find to craft a functional object for a personal ritual.

PROCESS

The prompt is meant to encourage individual process and intuitive making. After the 51 objects were collected, each maker responded to a short reflection. The objects collected were all made of scrap, with mterials ranging from wood, ceramic and metal to corn husk, newspaper and canvas.

I photographed each maker in their workspace to capture the spirit of their practice. Keeping in mind that the book is for those interested in making, I arranged their reflections systematically: the ritual they designed for, their approach to making and advice. I also carried out three interviews exploring different approaches to making.

A sequel to this book is currently being made for Pratt’s Production Labs...
